What does our name mean?

Tamasha
[təˈmɑːʃə] Noun
a grand show, performance, or celebration, especially one involving dance;
Colloquially, 'fun' or 'play' with bustle and excitement.

Bollywood
The term Bollywood was created by combining two names, Bombay (the city now called Mumbai) and Hollywood. Bollywood is the Indian Hindi-language film industry based in Mumbai. It is India’s – and the world’s - largest film industry in terms of the number of films produced, and also the number of tickets sold each year. In fact, Bollywood has become so internationally ubiquitous that it now has it’s own entry in the Oxford English Dictionary!

Bollywood Fusion Dance
The highlight of Bollywood movies are elaborate dance sequences and original soundtracks. It is not unusual to see Western pop and pure classical dance numbers side by side in a Bollywood film. Over the years Bollywood movies have developed their own signature style of song and dance, which combines the rich texture of India’s many classical and folk dances, fused with elements of Jazz, Hip – Hop, Arabic and Latin Forms.

About

Our aim is to create an open, accepting and unbiased space for people interested in bollywood-fusion dancing to come and enjoy the art form irrespective of their experience level, gender, age and handicaps. We aim to create a holistic space, where dance is used to unwind, de-stress, learn and explore.

What we do?
(1) provide an open-space for people to explore bollywood-fusion dance in all of its glory
(2) empower members to grow as individuals and express themselves through dance
(3) host bi-weekly workshops for our members
(4) host mostly g-body workshops that are open to all students, faculty and staff
(5) provide a place for individual choreographs to share and teach their dance piece
(5) collaborate with other dance teams to emphasize "Unity in Diversity"
(6) spread awareness about South Asian culture especially with relation to Bollywood

What dance styles?
At its core, Tamasha is a Bollywood Fusion dance, hence our dance reflects Bollywood and South Asian culture. We combine Bollywood with dance styles like Hip-Hop, Jazz Funk, Belly dancing, Heels, Folk Dances, Latin, Tutting, and so many more!

How are different from other South Asian dance teams at Cornell?
As of this year, Tamasha is the only non-competitive South Asian dance club. We wanted to provide a safe and welcoming place to anyone who enjoys dancing. Based on how you want to be involved and time commitment, you can choose to be on the e-board, member or part of our g-body. We are not restricted to a singular dance form, rather we are keen on learning more dance styles and recognize the culture they come from. We also believe in "Unity in Diversity" and hence invite other dance clubs/teams, and individual choreographs to come host a workshop with us.
